Design a Conference Expo Floor Plan That Drives Foot Traffic

A great expo layout means every exhibitor gets traffic, every attendee finds what they need, and the networking happens naturally.

Expo Layout Fundamentals

Expo floor plans follow different rules than event seating. The goal isn't to seat people — it's to move people past every exhibitor while creating natural stopping points.

  • Use a grid layout for booth placement — it maximizes booth count and creates navigable aisles
  • Main aisles should be 3m wide; secondary aisles 2-2.5m
  • Place anchor exhibitors (big names) at the back — they pull traffic through the entire hall
  • Registration and entrance should funnel attendees into the main aisle, not scatter them

Booth Layout Strategies

Not all booth positions are equal. Use strategic placement to maximize value for exhibitors and sponsors.

  • Premium booths: entrance-adjacent and corner positions (highest traffic, highest price)
  • Standard booths: mid-aisle positions with good visibility from the main walkway
  • Island booths (4-sided): center of the hall for major sponsors (3x3m to 6x6m)
  • Demo stations: place near networking lounges so presentations draw a natural audience

Networking & Common Areas

Attendees spend 30-40% of their expo time not at booths. Design for those in-between moments.

  • Add networking lounges between every 3-4 rows of booths with charging stations
  • Food and beverage stations at strategic intersections drive foot traffic to nearby booths
  • Create a "Speaker Corner" for quick talks — 30 seats, open on 3 sides, near the center
  • Place seating areas near exits — attendees rest before their next session

Building It in Floors.live

Here's the fastest workflow for creating an expo floor plan from scratch.

  • Upload the hall floor plan as background and calibrate scale to real dimensions
  • Use rectangular objects for booths — name each one with the exhibitor company
  • Clone rows of booths using copy-paste for rapid grid creation
  • Add text labels for aisle names (A1, A2, B1, B2) to help exhibitors and attendees navigate
  • Export as PDF for the exhibitor manual and share a live link for the operations team
